Can you help me answer this question for my English Literature?

Cr�vecoeur's "Letter III: What Is an American?" from Letters from an American Farmer uses an extended simile: humans are like plants. They can wither and be mowed down in a hostile environment, but they can grow and prosper in a favorable environment. What scientific and Enlightenment assumptions underlie Cr�vecoeur's reasoning here?
