How do you tighten a nylon dog collar?

This question makes me sound dumb but i dunno how to tighten a dog's collar, lol. i have had my golden retriever for 9yrs and my chihuahua for 2yrs but i never had to tighten the collars. They are too loose and i need to know how to tighten them. Thanks for answering :)
