Why are idiotic people popular, but smart people Not popular?

Bimbos, jocks, and every other common idiot is loved by society and people of higher intelligence are not as popular. Are dumb people less threatening? Are dumb people like puppies just cute and idiotic and therefore completely non threatening to be around?
